Realized I'm starting to unwittingly re-watch some things because they overlap themes, or because I just straight up forgot I'd already seen it. Happened to me again this year when I realized I'd already seen The American Scream!
Working on a big ol' spreadsheet with way too much data entered way too manually.
Also I got this cool domain and gotta justify paying for it I suppose.
Barbarian is a very entertaining horror movie in the way it induces dread. The story and any commentary it may make seems pretty thin, but that's not the point. From the beginning almost every action anyone takes is suspect, and almost always it leads to trouble. That can feel like a labyrinth at times, but the paths all lead to the same unhappy ending. Really good at what it is, and very memorable for that.
For as bad as this is, the story is surprisingly coherent. There's not much story, and every possible aspect of filmmaking is terrible, but at least it 'makes sense' in its own way. Don't do drugs because someone might put them in a turkey and ask you to eat the turkey and then you'll turn into a turkey.
A really effective 'descent into madness' story. It's focused, tense, and doesn't condescend about the subject (Maud). Honestly disturbing for much of the film and the kind of scary that sticks around a while. Really good.
It's an anthology series, so each episode is both a chance to try something different, and a chance to get it wrong. I think mostly, these get things right. It's not the pinnacle of horror, but it's very good dark fantasy. The Murmuring stood out for me in particular as actually eery, but was also very well acted and engaging. The Lovecraft stories are good versions, but I think I just don't care about Lovecraft mostly.
